Coronavirus infection rates are reaching new heights in communities throughout the midwest and south, according to NBC News.

Cities such as Nashville, Tennessee; Des Moines, Iowa; Amarillo and Texas have all experienced surges of more than 72 percent within a seven-day window, according to a coronavirus task force data unit. Central City, Ky. had the biggest increase at 650 percent.

The swell in infection rates could mean that hotspots are moving away from the east and west coasts and settling in toward the middle of the country and the south.

Charlotte and Kansas City have also seen spikes of more than 200 percent over last week.

In Texas, coronavirus cases have seen a sharp uptick within a week, with Dallas County recording a 116.8 percent increase and Fort Bend County tracking a 64.8 percent jump.
