New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy on Friday announced that crowds of up to 25 people could gather at campgrounds scheduled to reopen prior to Memorial Day weekend.

The governor amended the executive order he signed on Friday that restricts indoor gatherings at 10 people and requires indoor and outdoor groups to observe social distancing. Masks are required to be worn outside.

“I’m proud we are able to take this step today and add a little more hope and optimism to the start of the summer,” Murphy said during a press conference.

More than 152,000 people in New Jersey have been infected with coronavirus, and nearly 11,000 people have died from COVID-19.

Parks and beaches in New Jersey are allowed to reopen along with nonessential retail businesses that offer curbside service.

Murphy said other businesses such as gyms and salons will be reopened “in a matter of weeks.”

“If you were looking forward to gathering with your neighbors for a Memorial Day cookout, you may do so, so long as social distancing and personal responsibility remain the order of the day,” Murphy said.
