Oops, they did it again.
That's a paraphrase of Britney Spears, of course, and not a direct quote of great leader of America's past.
But CNN found itself facing no small amount of teasing from its detractors this week after it misquoted not one, but two icons of Americanism on Independence Day.
First, it was a dubious quote from President Abraham Lincoln which many took as a not-so-veiled shot at the current holder of that office, Donald Trump.
A little investigation from critic Terry Teachout and the Twitter account found something similar, but not quite:
And another user also chimed in.
The "quote" was close, but no cigar, CNN flat-out misattributed a quote in the same series to Benjamin Franklin:
As several adept Twitter users noted, Franklin never said that. They are the words of British writers John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon, who wrote "Cato's Letters" in the early 1720s.
CNN has been under fire in recent days from critics accusing the news network of threatening to identify a Reddit user who created the meme of President Donald Trump punching out the CNN logo if the user doesn't refrain from inappropriate online actions.
