CNN has fired a news editor, employed by the network for just six months, after uncovering at least 50 stories that she plagiarized, the network reported
on its website.
Marie-Louise Gumuchian worked in the network’s London bureau and wrote and reported about Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
"An unpublished story flagged last week during our editing process led to an internal investigation that uncovered other examples in about 50 published stories, and our investigation is ongoing," the cable network posted on its site. "Trust, integrity, and simply giving credit where it's due are among the tenets of journalism we hold dear, and we regret that we published material that did not reflect those essential standards."
CNN has removed the plagiarized material and in some cases has opted to delete entire articles.
The Washington Post reported that the following has been added to Gumuchian’s plagiarized stories:
"Editors' Note: This article has been edited to remove plagiarized content after CNN discovered multiple instances of plagiarism by Marie-Louise Gumuchian, a former CNN news editor."
The Post quoted a CNN source it didn't identify that the network’s digital staff discovered Gumuchian’s actions during routine editing. They then ran the questionable content through software designed to check for plagiarism and initially found a few instances, prompting a more thorough investigation of all of her work.
An "insane" number of problems were then covered, the source told the Post’s Erik Wemple.
CNN has notified Gumuchian’s previous employers, the Post said.
Gumuchian’s LinkedIn profile states that she’s employed by Reuters in Tripoli, Libya, and says that she has also worked for the international news wire in Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Senegal, and the United Kingdom. The profile indicates that she speaks French, Italian, Polish, and basic Arabic and is a 2004 honors graduate of the University of St. Andrew’s with a master’s degree in international relations and economics.
