The CIA is looking for a cloud contract worth "tens of billions" of dollars as it continues its push to store data remotely.

According to Nextgov, contracting documents were presented to several cloud companies in the tech industry last month. When awarded, the contract could total several billion dollars.

The project is called the Commercial Cloud Enterprise (C2E) and would "expand and enhance" the CIA's existing cloud capabilities with Amazon Web Services, according to the documents.

The CIA has worked with Amazon Web Services since 2013 on a 10-year contract worth as much as $600 million.

"Since that time, cloud computing has proven transformational for the [intelligence community] — increasing the speed at which new applications can be developed to support mission and improving the functionality and security of those applications," the CIA's new documents read, according to Nextgov.

In 2017, Amazon Web Services launched a new commercial cloud capability that could handle all levels of classified material, including top secret.

The CIA's top technology official applauded Amazon's cloud infrastructure last year, calling it "nothing short of transformational."
