Chris Christie can't ever escape his traffic scandal, even at a somber memorial for the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
According to a report on
Politico, Christie was scheduled to speak during the National September 11 Memorial Museum, followed by the performance of "Bridge Over Troubled Water."
That awkward moment was averted at the last minute when it was announced that Broadway star Idina Menzel, who was scheduled to sing the Simon and Garfunkel classic, was ill.
Some on social media complained that including the song was a deliberate jab at Christie, whose staff famously came under fire on charges that they orchestrated a traffic jam on the George Washington Bridge as a political payback to the mayor of Fort Lee, N.J.
In Menzel's place, 9/11 widow and fellow Broadway performer LaChanze sang "Amazing Grace."
Officials denied that the program change had anything to do with Christie, who has bigger problems to worry about this week.
He told CBS News host Bob Schieffer that he has
"limited options" to fix his state's financial problems, but that he will soon release a plan anyway.
"I have to fix it with 45 days left in my fiscal year," Christie said, criticizing three former governors for not making pension payments and putting the state’s budget at risk now.
