Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik on Tuesday slammed Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel for the soaring gun violence in the city, including 11 deaths and 70 others wounded over the weekend, and called for intervention by the Trump administration.

"Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's failed leadership and mismanagement is solely responsible for young people being slaughtered on Chicago's violent streets daily," Kerik, who oversaw the city's force during the 9/11 attacks, told Newsmax in an email.

"Without the right leadership, management and accountability, this violence will never diminish."

Kerik noted he was among the three police commissioners who served under former Mayor Rudy Giuliani during the disaster and subsequent rebuilding of New York, including its reduced violent crime rate.

"I know it can be done," he said. "I've done it under Mayor Giuliani's leadership.

"The question becomes why hasn’t Mayor Emanuel done anything to help the citizens of his city?" Kerik posed. "I strongly believe that it's time for President [Donald] Trump and his administration to get involved — for the people of Chicago."
