Calling the transgender bathroom law in North Carolina "a solution in search of an issue," conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer said Republicans should have left well enough alone.
"I mean, do we really have an epidemic of transgenders being evil in bathrooms across the country? I haven't heard of a single case," he said Thursday on
Fox News Channel's "Special Report."
"It is not a major national problem, and it should have been left that way," Krauthammer said.
His opinion was in the minority among the show's panel. Radio talk show host Laura Ingraham blamed the media for using the issue as a "gotcha question" against Republican presidential candidates.
"If Ted Cruz says something, he is intolerant.
If [Donald] Trump says what he says, he is completely off the rails in conservatism," she said. "This is a state issue. We are all inclined to think everything has a federal solution. Let the states figure it out. This is not exactly Rosa Parks and the bus here."
Former Fox News correspondent Jim Angle said the law simply states that a person has to use the bathroom that corresponds to his or her birth certificate, and he "can't imagine it working any other way."
Still, he said Cruz was a bit hyperbolic implying grown men would be allowed to use a restroom for young girls, such as in a school.
