A special team of 20 chaplains from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association has been dispatched to riot-torn Charlotte, North Carolina, to offer "emotional and spiritual care" after the police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott.
The Charlotte Observer reports the chaplains from the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team have a long history of traveling to the scenes of American tragedies.
In 2012, they spent three weeks in in Newtown, Conn., helping the families affected by the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. And earlier this year, they were on the scene after police shootings or civil unrest in Dallas, Baton Rouge and Milwaukee, The Observer reports.
Of the Charlotte situation, Jack Munday, international director of the Rapid Response Team, told the Observer:
"This is a tragic situation, which has resulted in a lot of pain, mourning and anger. Our goal is to offer a ministry of presence, being in the area to offer peace and hope into a dark and difficult time."
