Guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on reporting new coronavirus cases are not being followed by at least 28 states.
CNN is reporting those states are failing to report probable cases. According to the news network, probable cases include those showing evidence of an infection without being confirmed by a lab test. The guidelines also call for states to report cases where the cause of death is listed as coronavirus without lab test confirmation.
California, Florida, New York and Texas – some of the states with the largest populations – are among those failing to report probable cases.
CNN reported that the CDC guidelines are voluntary.
Twenty-six states have seen an increase or steady rate of new cases of the coronavirus, CNN noted. And it points out decisions on how to reopen are based on having accurate counts of COVID-19.
And The Texas Tribune reported the 14-day trend lines for the state shows new infections have risen about 71% in the past two weeks.
CNN, citing data from Johns Hopkins University, noted that more than 1.9 million Americans have been infected, and more than 111,000 have died in just over four months.
