A terminally ill cancer patient was charged Tuesday with three counts of premeditated attempted murder in a plot to kill nearly a dozen Bay Area oncologists who had been treating him, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Yue Chen, 58, was terminally ill with Stage 4 cancer and did not have long to live, according to his family. He was arrested May 31 about 20 miles outside of Palo Alto and had in his car a white rubber mask, a notebook with names, two loaded guns, and addresses and directions to the homes of several doctors, court documents show.

He told investigators he believed doctors had treated him like a "laboratory monkey" and damaged his spine so they could train new students.

"This is a man with nothing to lose and wants to take people with him," Santa Clara County deputy district attorney Charles Huang said.

Chen's family reported him missing and police who went to his home found a note that said he "had to kill these doctors today because they are evil." An Internet history search on his computer revealed names of some of the doctors he targeted and officers who searched his home noticed the two handguns registered under his name were missing.

Chen drove to a hospital in San Francisco and also visited another location where he thought one of the doctors lived before being apprehended.
