Gunman Santino Legan, 19, who killed three people and wounded a dozen others when he opened fire at a California food festival Sunday was preparing for a large-scale attack, a newly released search warrant suggests, CBS News reported Wednesday.
Investigators found a bulletproof vest, gas mask, knife, and gun pamphlets when they searched Legan's Nevada home.
A shotgun was also recovered from the suspect's car – and it and the assault rifle used in the shooting were bought legally in Nevada, according to police.
The festival grounds in Gilroy are still considered a crime scene, and investigators say it could take up to five more days to finish processing all the evidence.
Police say they are currently searching through the suspect's phone and computer in an attempt to better understand his mindset.
CNN reported a mixed picture of the gunman is emerging, explaining that while Legan's social media activity suggests he had xenophobic or racist tendencies, a neighbor said he and his family appeared to be nice people.
In addition, while former classmates said Legan did not particularly stand out, a Gilroy High School employee described him as a troublemaker who was "difficult to manage" when he did go to class.
