Cain's Wife to Lead 'Women for Cain' Group

Herman Cain’s presidential bid changed from confused to bizarre on Friday as his campaign announced that his wife Gloria will head a new “Women for Cain” group.

The news came just as Cain was meeting his wife face-to-face for the first time since Atlanta businesswoman Ginger White claimed that she had had a 13-year on-and-off affair with the former pizza mogul.

And it came as the same campaign revealed that Cain will make a “major announcement” on Saturday, without revealing what it will be about. Cain has said he will decide whether to quit the race over this weekend due to the damage caused by White’s accusation.

Gloria Cain has largely stayed in Atlanta while her husband has hit the campaign trail. He returned home on Friday to talk to her about whether he should continue his bid or drop out. Her only public appearances were on Fox News where she defended her husband against allegations that he had sexually harassed a series of women he had worked with in the 1990s, and at a Thanksgiving Day rally in Des Moines, Iowa.

It is unclear whether she will take a more public profile now that she is leading the new group, which describes itself as an "online national fellowship of women dedicated to helping elect Herman Cain as the next President of the United States," is unclear.

Cain’s campaign tweeted about the new group on Friday morning, saying “Now women can stand with Mr. Cain’s wife Gloria, to support Herman Cain!”

Women for Cain describe Gloria as “National Chairperson” on its website, saying that she is “the very special woman who Mr. Cain devoted his life to many years ago.” However there is no personal message from her.

On its news pages, the site reprints articles attacking Cain’s accusers, including one by Mychal Massie entitled “Ginger White: Another Loser Trying to Cash In.”

Cain’s campaign has been criticized several times for failing to coordinate its message. The website Politico said it “will go down as one of the most hapless and bumbling operations in modern presidential politics, setting a new standard for how to turn damaging press coverage into something far worse.”
