Majority of Americans Support Tax Deal

Americans appear to agree that the White House and congressional Republicans did the right thing last week in their tax compromise. A new ABC News/Washington Post poll shows that 69 percent of Americans support the agreement to extend Bush-era tax cuts across the board for two years, extend unemployment benefits for 13 months, cut payroll taxes for a year and increase the exemption for estate taxes, The Hill reports.

The survey indicates 29 percent of Americans oppose the deal, while 2 percent have no opinion.

The only element of the deal that Americans dislike on its own is the payroll tax cut, with 57 percent opposing the 2 percent reduction next year in the taxes that fund Social Security.

But there’s a good chance respondents don’t understand what the reduction means.
