George W. Bush: ‘Some Surprised I Can Even Read’

Monday, 15 April 2013 12:26 PM EDT

Former President George W. Bush says he is taking “great delight in busting stereotypes,” as word has gotten out that he has turned into an avid painter.

“People are surprised,” the former commander-in-chief told The Dallas Morning News. “Of course, some people are surprised I can even read.”

Joking aside, Bush said painting is “a way to create. I enjoy creating. ... You can express yourself in a way that’s unique.”

Bush began his painting about a year ago, inspired by former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who also was a dedicated painter. Bush found Gail Norfleet, a Dallas artist who teaches painting. He takes lessons from her about once a week and paints almost daily.

So how good an artist is Bush? “Thus far, the signature is more valuable than the painting,” he said.

When it comes to his record in the White House, “I’m comfortable with what I did,” Bush said. “I’m comfortable with who I am.”

He defended his policies on various issues, including the Medicare drug expansion, the deficit, tax cuts, the bank bailout, the economy’s strength, the Iraq war, and his “compassionate conservatism.”

“The best way for people to understand what I meant by ‘compassionate conservative’ is to look at the programs we implemented and look at the results,” he told The Dallas Morning News.
