HARTSDALE, N.Y. (AP) — New York is once again allowing animal lovers to rest in peace with their pets in pet cemeteries.
The state Division of Cemeteries has issued regulations restoring a practice that it banned earlier this year. Pet owners now can, once again, have their ashes buried with their favorite animals.
But there are some conditions. For example, pet cemeteries may not advertise that they accept human ashes or charge a fee for doing so. The director of a pet cemetery in the New York suburbs says he has no problem with that. The cemetery has been adding human ashes to pet plots since 1925.
A lawyer who battled the prohibition says the decision is a good Christmas gift. Her uncle's burial had been delayed for months because of the ban.
