The Trump administration is slated to announce a nationwide ban on the sale and use of bump stocks as soon as this week, according to a new report.

CNN reported Wednesday evening the ban will be unveiled despite pushback from some lawmakers and gun rights groups like the NRA.

Bump stocks are fitted on semi-automatic firearms and force the trigger onto the user's finger as he or she leans into the device. Holding that position makes the gun mimic the firing rate of an automatic weapon.

The shooter in the October 2017 Las Vegas massacre used bump stocks on the multiple rifles he fired during the incident that killed 58 people at a country music concert.

President Donald Trump said in February he would ban bump stocks with an executive order.

According to CNN, the ban that will be announced in the coming days will require bump stock owners to destroy them or hand them over to police within 90 days.

"Bump stocks turn semi-automatic guns into illegal machine guns," a senior official at the Department of Justice told CNN. "This final rule sends a clear message: Illegal guns have no place in a law-and-order society, and we will continue to vigorously enforce the law to keep these illegal weapons off the street."
