Brown University says students applying to the storied Ivy League school's graduate program can now identify as one of seven underrepresented groups of people of color.

They include "those who self-identify as American Indian, Alaskan Native, African American, Hispanic or Latino and Native Hawaiian and/or Pacific Islander," the Brown Daily Herald reports.

Marlina Duncan, associate dean of diversity initiatives at the Graduate School, told the newspaper the change will help improve recruitment and retention of these students.

"We can attract amazing students, but when they get here, we need to make sure that this is an inclusive environment," she said.

Brown, established in 1764 and located on a 143-acre campus in Providence, Rhode Island, and is home to 2,200 post graduate students and 6,500 undergrads.
