Bozell: Mainstream Media’s Liberal Bias Alive and Well

The chief of the media watchdog group Media Research Center believes the liberal bias of the mainstream media has intensified recently, singling out coverage of the Benghazi attacks and the recent 60 Minutes joint interview featuring President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Brent Bozell told Newsmax TV that the recent State Department memo, which details that the government authorized drone attacks against U.S. citizens as part of its crackdown on al Qaeda, would have received substantially more coverage under a Republican White House.

“The media would be appalled if the Bush administration were considering these things. When it comes to national defense and foreign policy, this administration has been at the very lease questionable things,” he said. “Look at the Fast and Furious scandal where people died. Look at Benghazi where our ambassador died, as did three others. Where’s the media interest in this?”

Conversely, Bozell said, mainstream media outlets rushed to a controversy involving the Reagan or Bush presidencies.
“Anytime there was a controversy, there was always the desire to get to the bottom of it, whatever it might be, when it involved a Republican,” he said. “There is no desire to get to the bottom of Obama’s scandals, just like there was no desire to get to the bottom of Clinton’s scandals.”

Speaking of the 60 Minutes interview, Bozell called the interview “a true embarrassment.”

“This is the show of the late Mike Wallace that had in its DNA to make their guests uncomfortable. This is the network that went after George Bush on the Troopergate story, which turned out to be false, but it was on 60 Minutes,” he said. “Now, look at their coverage of Barack Obama. This was I believe the 13th interview with Steve Kroft. It was nothing but pom poms that put him and Hillary Clinton next to each other in a kissy-faced interview. It was all done to project Hillary Clinton as the heir apparent to Barack Obama. It was shameless.”

Turning to suggestions that have been made by Obama that Fox News and other conservative outlets made bipartisan legislation more difficult, Bozell said it’s “a ridiculous notion” for Obama to blame the media for anything.

“They’re shameless in their worship of him. The only exception has been Fox News and he singles Fox News out. But what I find really curious is that while it’s OK to blame the media or criticize the media – they all do that – I don’t know of any president who has ever singled out a media entity and who has waged war using the assets of the White House against a media entity,” Bozell said. “Barack Obama has done that and that’s way beyond the pale.”

Bozell goes on to say that he believes Obama wants to marginalize Fox News.

“He wants to make Fox News impolite company and put the tag of controversy and scandal around it and suggest it is as powerful or more powerful than the alphabet soup of other networks,” Bozell said. “I love Fox News. In fact, Fox News’ audience is miniscule when compared to (the other news operations combined). This just goes to show how much Fox News scares these people. It makes the toothpaste come out of the tube. American people get information because of Fox News.”
