Political commentator and GOP spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany on Tuesday defended as "lawful" the Border Patrol's use of tear gas against asylum seekers who rushed the fencing separating Mexico and California.
In an interview on Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now," McEnany condemned what she said was men pushing women toward the front of the rushing crowds.
"This was a lawful act by Customs and Border Patrol to protect themselves," she said.
"A mainstream media likes to act as if this was all women and children," she added. "It's just not the case. Of the 43 [who] were initially arrested, just eight of them were women. In fact, the men in the caravan were pushing the women and children forward as a sort of barrier or protective individuals to protect the men and shield the men."

McEnany also predicted, in the U.S. trade dispute with China, Beijing "will buckle" as the nations negotiate ahead of the G-20 meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina, beginning Friday.
"We will come to a point of agreement in compromise," she predicted, adding, "because the Chinese economy cannot sustain that kind of action with the United States."
She also called defeated GOP Utah Rep. Mia Love's rebuke of President Donald Trump and the Republican Party's relationship with minorities "sour grapes."
"I think we're going to win more and more minority communities because we're on the right side of history here," McEnany said.
