Less than a week after he was elected to the U.S. Senate by New Jersey voters, Newark Mayor Cory Booker will preside over the marriage ceremonies of several same-sex couples in the Garden State.
Booker, a Democrat who defeated Republican Steve Lonegan for the seat left vacant by the death of Sen. Frank Lautenberg, will officiate over 10 or more unions,
Buzzfeed.com reports.
The ceremonies will take place at Newark City Hall beginning at 12:01 a.m. Monday.
Last month, state Superior Court Judge Mary Jacobson ordered the state to extend equal marriage rights to same-sex couples, ruling that it would give them "equal protection of the law under the New Jersey Constitution.”
Gov. Chris Christie is appealing the ruling to the state Supreme Court.
Booker had steadfastly refused to perform any weddings as mayor until same-sex couples were allowed to tie the knot.
