Rep. Blackburn: 'Science on our Side' When it Comes to Abortion Bill

By    |   Wednesday, 19 June 2013 05:20 PM EDT

Rep. Marsha Blackburn says the new abortion restrictions passed by the GOP-controlled House on Tuesday was a good move despite the fact it has little to no chance of passing.

"First and foremost . . . 80 percent of the American people think later-term abortion should be banned," Blackburn told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below.

"Science is on our side on this. Those babies can feel, they respond to pain."

The bill — banning abortions 20 weeks after fertilization, with exceptions for rape and incest victims who report the crime to police — has no chance of becoming law with a Democrat-controlled Senate and the White House threatening a veto.

But Blackburn said the vote was worth the effort.

"What we want to do is fight for these babies to give them the ability to enjoy life, that first guarantee that is there for them," she said.

"The president, the Democrats, the Senate, the Democrat-led Senate, they are out of step with the American mainstream and, more importantly than that, they're out of step with what abortion policy is in the rest of the world," she said.

"We have one of the most liberal abortion policies in the world."

Despite the fact the Democrats will quash the bill, Blackburn is going to appeal to key lawmakers to change their minds.

"We think [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid should take it up. You have to end the Gosnell-type abortions that are taking place in this country," she said, referring to the Philadelphia abortion doctor convicted of murder for snipping the spines of babies that lived through the procedure.
