Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has released a new ad highlighting his religion, and the fact that his election would make him “the first Jewish president in the history of this country.”
The ad begins with Jewish climate change activist Jamie Margolin saying that Sanders’ election would be “a huge step forward” and “blowback against the rise of anti-Semitism.”
She adds later, “They were chanting in Charlottesville ‘Jews will not replace us!’ Having a Jew literally replace them, would be like -- that would be so satisfying.”
The video also shows a clip of President Donald Trump claiming that “any Jewish people that vote for a Democrat, I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.”
In another, he apparently says of Jewish Republicans, “You’re not going to support me because I don’t want your money,” and “you want to control your own politician, that’s fine.”
The ad shows various news clips about anti-Semitism in America. One quotes a neo-Nazi claiming that Trump’s election “has emboldened him and his followers.”
“It is a difficult time to be Jewish right now considering the Trump administration’s anti-Semitism,” Margolin adds. “There’s been a spike in hate crimes and Nazi empowerment.”
“If there was ever a time in American history where we say no to religious bigotry, this is the time,” Sanders says, after reflecting about his family’s history during the Holocaust.
