A barber in Kingston, N.Y., who defied the state’s stay-at-home order and continued cutting hair has tested positive for coronavirus, according to the Ulster County Department of Health.

In a statement Wednesday, the county health commissioner advised anyone who received a haircut in the past three weeks at the barbershop to seek testing for COVID-19.

The statement did not identify the barber or the shop.

“We are taking extraordinary measures to try and minimize the spread of this dangerous disease and learning that a barbershop has been operating illicitly for weeks with a COVID-19 positive employee is extraordinarily disheartening,” Dr. Carol Smith said.

“As much as we would all like to go out and get a professional haircut, this kind of direct contact has the potential to dramatically spread this virus throughout our community and beyond,” she continued. “I urge anyone who has received a haircut at a Kingston barber in the last several weeks to immediately contact their physician or call our hotline to arrange for a diagnostic test."

Ulster County has 1,542 confirmed cases of coronavirus with 64 deaths.
