A Baltimore lawmaker wants the city to boycott Florida businesses in protest of the Sunshine State’s "stand-your-ground" law, following the acquittal of George Zimmerman.
"I never want to see another Trayvon Martin again in my lifetime," city councilman Nick Mosby told
the Baltimore Sun.
"Nor do I want to see another policy that exacerbates the social issues we have in this country."
Zimmerman, a Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer, was charged with murder in the shooting death of black teenager Trayvon Martin in in Sanford, Fla.
The racially-tinged case ended with jurors finding Zimmerman
not guilty, based on his argument that he had acted in self-defense after Martin attacked him.
Florida’s "stand-your-ground" law allows individuals to use deadly force to defend themselves without the need to retreat.
While not used as part of Zimmerman’s defense, it was mentioned to the jury by the trial judge.
Mosby said he will file a resolution Monday asking city agencies and investment boards to avoid doing business with Florida companies.
He also wants city officials to avoid traveling to Florida.
Mosby’s proposed legislation would not force the city to avoid dealing with Florida, but would strongly back it.
