Gunman Killed After Opening Fire on Police Headquarters in Austin

Friday, 28 November 2014 08:19 AM EST

Austin police have fatally shot a man who opened fire at several buildings downtown and may have had explosives.

Assistant Chief Raul Munguia says nobody else was hurt. The shootings happened before dawn Friday.

Authorities received 911 calls about shots fired at buildings downtown. Munguia said bullets struck police headquarters.

He also said an officer who was outside police headquarters saw the suspect, who was wearing some type of vest, and shot him.

The man's vehicle was parked in an area near police headquarters, the Mexican consulate and a U.S. federal courthouse. Investigators are trying to determine if the suspect had improvised explosive devices in his vehicle.

Police didn't immediately identify the suspect or provide a possible motive.
