Apple has explored buying a medical-clinic startup as part of a bigger push into healthcare, CNBC reported Monday.
The startup, Crossover Health, works with larger employers — especially self-insured employers — to build and run on-site medical clinics, the outlet reported, citing unnamed sources.
The Apple-Crossover talks went on for months but did not end in a deal; Apple also approached nationwide primary care group One Medical, the outlet reported.
The interest in primary care has been going on for more than a year, CNBC reported, but it is not clear whether Apple would build its own network of clinics or partner with existing entities.
"Such a move wouldn't surprise me as Apple has demonstrated that its interest in healthcare isn't superficial," Richard Milani of Ochsner Health System in New Orleans, which was one of the first hospitals to use the Apple Watch as a patient health-monitoring tool, told CNBC.
"Primary care is in great need of re-imagining and rethinking."
