The attorney for fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has slammed James Comey, asserting his client "repeatedly" told his former boss he was working with The Wall Street Journal on a leak that eventually led to his firing by the Justice Department.
"In his comments this week about the McCabe matter, former FBI Director James Comey has relied on the accuracy and the soundness of the Office of the Inspector General's (OIG) conclusions in their report on Mr. McCabe," Michael Bromwich said in a statement Wednesday via Twitter.
"In fact, the report fails to adequately address the evidence (including sworn testimony) and documents that prove that Mr. McCabe advised Director Comey repeatedly that he was working with The Wall Street Journal on the stories in question prior to publication," he said.
"Neither Mr. Comey nor the OIG is infallible — and, in this case, neither of them has it right."
Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe last month for misleading statements to investigators, including while under oath — and the Justice Department's IG has referred criminal charges against McCabe to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, according to news reports.
McCabe's statements concerned his authorization of FBI agents to talk to the Journal about the agency's probe into Hillary Clinton private email use.
Bromwich's statement was released Wednesday, before the reports about the Justice Department's referral.
In an interview on "The View" earlier Wednesday, Comey called McCabe "a good person" but said he agreed with the inspector general's report.
"The inspector general found that he lied, and there are severe consequences in the Justice Department for lying as there should be throughout the government," Comey told the program, according to Politico.
He is on a tour promoting his new book, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership."
"The McCabe case illustrates what an organization that's committed to the truth looks like," Comey said. "I ordered that investigation.
"We investigate and hold people accountable."
