New Jersey Democrat congressional candidate Amy Kennedy said Monday she is canceling all her in-person campaign events after being in close proximity with someone over the weekend who has since tested positive for the coronavirus, Politico reported.

Although Kennedy tested negative on Monday and has shown no symptoms, “out of an abundance of caution, and in line with both Amy’s desire to lead by example and her commitment to protecting public health, she will be canceling all of her in-person events and following state quarantine protocols,” said her campaign manager Josh Roesch.

He added that “Amy will continue to reach out to voters across the district through virtual events for the remainder of the campaign” and will get tested again later this week.

Roesch said that Kennedy had interacted with someone at an outdoor event on Saturday, but did not say where it was, according to The Press of Atlantic City.

Kennedy had two separate campaign events outside at the Galloway Township Municipal Complex on Saturday, with about 40 people participating in the afternoon event.

She is running against Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew, who won the seat two years ago as a Democrat and then defected to the GOP side, according to Politico.

Kennedy is a former school teacher and is married to former Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., the son of the late Sen. Ted Kennedy.

Kennedy, who has outraised and outspent Van Drew, holds a statistically insignificant 46% to 45% lead in a recent Stockton University poll of 676 likely voters.

The race has become one of the most hotly contested races nationwide, with Democrats eager to win back a seat they thought they had already captured in 2018 and to extract revenge for the representative's high-profile defection.
