New York Democratic House candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez revealed her grandfather was among those who died in Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017.
And she said thousands of Puerto Ricans have similar stories about losing loved ones.
Her comments came in a tweet on Thursday. Her Twitter post came in response to a tweet by President Donald Trump disputing death estimates from the storm.
Trump on Thursday denied Puerto Rico’s official death toll and claimed that Democrats inflated the figures.
According to the government of Puerto Rico, an estimated 2,975 people died as a result of Maria.
“My own grandfather died in the aftermath of the storm, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “Uncounted. Thousands of Puerto Ricans have similar stories. They have lost children, friends, & family members. Instead of finger-pointing, INVEST in the Marshall Plan for Puerto Rico + just transition to renewable energy.”
