The staff at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada is honoring the victims of last month's mass shooting in Las Vegas by repainting an F-15A Eagle to read "We Are Vegas Strong."
The Air Force Times reported that the base originally planned to repaint the fighter jet in a livery that would mark the service's 70th anniversary this year. After the Vegas shooting, during which a gunman killed 58 people and wounded more than 500, the base decided to honor the victims of the tragedy.
The base is about 13 miles from the Las Vegas Strip.
Painted on the left side of the jet's tail is the famous "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign, but those words are replaced with "We Are Vegas Strong" and the date of the shooting, Oct. 1, 2017. A skyline of the city is also painted on the tail.
"Vegas Strong" is painted along the side of the aircraft.
The jet will be on display at this weekend's Aviation Nation Air and Space Expo at Nellis.
The Air Force has come under fire in regards to last weekend's mass shooting at a Texas church. Twenty-six people were killed and 20 were wounded. The shooter had an extensive and violent criminal record while he served in the Air Force, but the service failed to communicate that to the federal government — which allowed him to purchase weapons once he became a civilian.
