Kasich to Romney: You Should Be 'Living' in Ohio

Wednesday, 24 October 2012 10:47 AM EDT

Ohio Gov. John Kasich suggested Tuesday that Mitt Romney should move to Ohio for the final two weeks of his campaign and focus all his attention on undecided voters.

"It's hard to imagine that at this point anybody could be undecided, but apparently there are some," the Republican told Fox News during a brief interview on the critically important role his state could play in determining the next president.

"What you can do is see Romney living in Ohio. I wonder if we can get him to pay income taxes while he is here," he joked.

"But in all seriousness . . . you see great momentum across the state [for Romney]," he said.

"People are enthusiastic, and the polls apparently indicate that Republicans are sort of more intensely motivated," Kasich continued. "You keep that up and you search for undecided voters.

"And he needs to be here. The more people see him and more they like him, the more they get him."

Asked about the state's improving economy, which Democrats believe will help President Barack Obama win the state, Kasich acknowledged that things have changed for the better and that "people are more and more optimistic about the situation in Ohio."

But he said he constantly worries about "this bad news" coming out of Washington. He said  businesses in the state are still holding back on investments and more job creation because of fears about the possibility of higher taxes and whether their employee healthcare costs are going to increase under Obamacare.

"So they are sitting on the sidelines . . . and that kind of paralysis hurts our ability to come back," he said.

"That is why I'm for Mitt Romney. I think he will remove that uncertainty. He will be clear on what he wants to do and we'll do better."

The governor said he believes the election will still come down "to one thing" for most Ohio voters — "Who is going to fatten this wallet?'

Kasich acknowledged, however, that his state has been helped by the auto industry bailout initiated by the president, although he suggested the boost to the state economy by the bailout has been exaggerated.

Nonetheless, he said, "I wouldn't care if they gave credit to the green Martian, just so people are working."
