Md.'s Cardin Safest Among Democrat Senate Candidates

Monday, 29 October 2012 08:55 AM EDT

Maryland Democrat Ben Cardin appears to be one of the safest incumbents running for the U.S. Senate, according to a new poll showing that half of likely voters support him over Republican challenger Daniel Bongino and independent Rob Sobhani.

According to poll conducted for the Baltimore Sun, Bongino registered only 24 percent support while Potomac businessman Sobhani drew 14 percent, despite spending millions of his own money in an effort to cut into Cardin's lead.

The Sun reported Monday the poll of 801 likely voters taken Oct. 20-23 indicated Sobhani's presence in the race may be taking away votes from the GOP's Bongino.

The poll also found that Cardin, who is seeking a second term, also leads in every demographic group, whether it's men, women, whites, blacks, or younger and older voters. He also appears to be drawing a higher percentage of undecided voters as well.

Cardin, who has called for a balance between spending cuts and taxes to deal with the nation's debt crisis, is doing much better than many Democratic Senate candidates across the country, particularly in Virginia and Nevada, where the races are dead heats and could decide which party ends up controlling the chamber.
