Chris Christie 'Slow Jam News' With Jimmy Fallon a 'Late Night' Hit (Video)

By    |   Thursday, 13 June 2013 10:46 AM EDT

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie dropped by NBC's "Late Night" Wednesday to lend his vocals on Jimmy Fallon's signature bit, "Slow Jam the News."

Christie, who announced Tuesday he will hold a special election in October to fill the vacant U.S. Senate seat left after Frank Lautenberg died earlier this month, delivered that announcement backed by smooth, R&B beats from Fallon's house band The Roots.

"As you know, New Jersey has a vacant seat in the U.S. Senate," Christie slow-jammed. "Now, I have the choice to either appoint a handpicked replacement or let the people vote on their new senator. As governor, I have a responsibility to ensure the citizens of New Jersey have a voice in Washington… The decisions that need to be made in Washington are too great to be determined by an appointee for 18 months. What we don't need is another unelected politician just sittin' around in Congress."

Fallon provided the R&B-style interludes while Christie nodded along. Fallon's NBC colleague Brian Williams typically delivers the slow jam of the news, and President Barack Obama even did it once during his 2012 presidential campaign.

Christie also took the opportunity to stir up the rumor mill about the 2016 presidential election.

"Now look at you, soundin' all presidential-like," Fallon said to Christie at one point. "You got something you wanna announce on the show right now?"

"Come on Jimmy," the governor said. "Do you really think I'd come on this show to announce a presidential run?"

Many people took to Twitter afterwards to speak out about Christie's "performance."
