Today's blog is my interview with Peter Navarro, discussing his new book about the COVID-19 pandemic and 2020 presidential election.
Peter Navarro was one of President Donald Trump's top trusted advisers in his administration. He served as assistant to the president, director of trade and manufacturing policy, and the national Defense Production Act policy coordinator.
He was also the first director of the White House National Trade Council. Navarro utilized analytical skills honed while earning a Master in public administration from Harvard Kennedy and a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard.
His latest book was just released: "In Trump Time: A Journal of America's Plague Year."
It reminds me of Christopher Isherwood's "The Berlin Stories." We know how the story ends, but we're given a close glimpse of the personalities and dynamics involved. Also, like Isherwood's writings, the pace accelerates as the book unfolds — creating true tension and engagement for the reader.
I interviewed Navarro by phone.
We touched on the fact that some people are still making more money to stay home than work, there are depressed wages from the open southern border and the general labor shortage, contrasting with workers being forced out with vaccine mandates.
Navarro reiterated his viewpoint that there is no way out of this situation during a Biden administration, stating, "(Not) until we put Fauci in jail and end him heading policy. We had this rolling (last) November.
"I never imagined that the vaccine would be used as a weapon against workers. It's the stupidest damned thing I've ever heard. Pete Buttigieg is still staying home," Navarro added.
Speaking further on the subject of Dr. Anthony Fauci, Navarro pointed out, "I didn't know him. I had to fight him all the way. It was the biggest lie of omission in American history, the Wuhan lab. He knows it's from Wuhan. He also knows he funded the gain of function research.
"He should have come clean," Navarro said. "He did not do that, it changed world history. We could have designed a stronger vaccine. I told 'The Boss' twice to fire Fauci, but who am I?"
As to his goals for the book, Navarro states that his main aims are, "Getting to the bottom of the election, betrayal of [Mike] Pence and firing of Fauci."
I pointed out to Navarro that he had some pretty harsh things to say about some of the president's associates and relatives, but that President Trump still gave a nice quote for the book jacket. I wondered if he had anything else to say about that.
Navarro demurred. "I don't really talk about private conversations with the president."
I asked him about the CDC's position that pets can get COVID-19 and if that would be the next push.
"Let's cross that bridge (when we get there)," he sighed in response.
Knowing that his main economic position is "Buy American," I pointed out that it is really tough when we have to watch every penny.
"It's not tough," Navarro disagreed. "I had to fight this with OMB (Office of Management and Budget). When we generate jobs here, there are corporate tax revenues, profit tax on US. soil. Think of the supply chain!"
I reminded Navarro about Amazon canceling the sale of Chinese/foreign plant seeds, for fear of invasive species. What did they know that we didn't know? "They know what we already knew. They are the source of all malicious things."
