There are two more facets to the disastrous disruptor-coddling, school-indiscipline bill California Gov. Gavin Newsom gleefully signed recently. As we
wrote earlier, this foolish and dangerous bill, as reported by KABC, bans “all state public and charter schools from suspending students for ‘willful defiance,’ which includes disrupting class or openly resisting directions from teachers.”
Even if the bill isn’t keeping future school shooters in the classroom, it is still an outrageous burden on children who aren’t raised by wolves. At the cost of keeping surly ill–behaved ‘students’ in class, leftists are making it impossible for normal children, who obey the rules, to get an education.
The chaos a single disruptive child causes in an elementary or middle school classroom can end any hope of learning for students. While the teacher is dealing with the out-of-control child the rest of the class is watching, talking, and taking note.
When there are absolutely no consequences for misbehaving, borderline children will go ahead and cross the misbehavior line so they can get attention, too. With a single bill the state has completely undermined the classroom authority of the teacher.
Keeping order, creating an environment for learning, and advancing the children’s core of knowledge will be at the mercy of any lout in the classroom who gets bored. And teachers won’t be able to do anything to remedy the situation. Dopey Democrats like Sen. Nancy Skinner may contend ending “willful defiance suspensions may be one of the best ways to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline, by keeping kids in school where teachers and counselors can help them.” But that is at the cost of ending that year’s education for the rest of the class.
If teachers could make the parents of well-behaving children aware of the chaos in the classroom this bill will wreak, possibly they could pressure school administrators to put decent children first. But don’t hold your breath. Schools carefully limit the communication of teachers with parents and any teacher who alerted parents regarding a dangerous or disruptive situation in class would soon find themselves suspended or out of a job altogether.
And speaking of teachers, how many highly-motivated young people are going to want to become teachers when they learn maintaining control of the classroom is a decision by the students and not the teacher? And how many excellent teachers are going want to stay in government schools after spending a year trying to teach in dysfunction junction?
This bill couldn’t have been better designed to help private schools poach teachers from chaotic government schools.
All it takes is one defiant kid to ruin the learning experience for the rest of the class. Gavin Newsom’s bill ensures it will happen day after day after day.
