President Donald Trump declared Monday his administration is winning on its zero-tolerance immigration — saying his 2016 campaign chant of "build that wall" has become a 2018 policy to "continue that wall."
At a rally in Columbia, South Carolina, to support GOP Gov. Henry McMaster's primary runoff with businessman John Warren, Trump asserted, "We're winning now."
"We're winning with our military," he said. "Our military is now being built up like you wouldn't believe . . . We're winning on trade. We're winning on trade. We're defending our borders."
When the crowd chanted "Build that wall," Trump quickly responded: "Oh, it's happening."
"It's not 'build that wall' anymore," he said. "It's 'continue building that wall.' We're building it . . . we're fixing it, miles and miles."
He also lashed out at Democrats, saying "they want open borders, and they don't mind crime" — and charged that old pictures were used to depict detention facilities being used for children of detained illegal immigrants.
"They were using pictures taken in 2014 when Barack Obama was president," he said, adding, "and what I learned is one thing: Our facilities are cleaner, better kept, and better run."
"The Democrats want open borders, they want anybody they want including MS-13 pouring into the country," he continued. "And the Democrats don't like ICE . . . they don't like Border Patrol. They don't like your police. They don't like anybody."
He also asserted he has refused to sign an order for 5,000 more immigration judges.
"I said where are you going to find 5,000 people to be judges? How many do we have now?"
he related. "'I don't know the number.' They don't know the number, even though they're in charge. . . . So, I said [Monday], I don't want judges. I want ICE and Border Patrol agents. That's what I want."
