White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany came to President Donald Trump’s defense on Friday, accusing the media for taking his comments on treating the coronavirus with disinfectants “out of context.”
“President Trump has repeatedly said that Americans should consult with medical doctors regarding coronavirus treatment, a point that he emphasized again during yesterday’s briefing,” McEnany said in a statement. “Leave it to the media to irresponsibly take President Trump out of context and run with negative headlines.”
During a coronavirus briefing Thursday, the president asked if light and disinfectants could be used as a possible treatment for the coronavirus. The president did say medical doctors should be involved in any tests, Fox News reports.
Trump posed the questions after the acting undersecretary for science and technology at the Department of Homeland Security Bill Bryan presented research that heat and bleach were effective in killing the virus on surfaces.
Trump was slammed on social media by doctors for suggesting people ingest or inject disinfectant to treat the virus.
The comments prompted Reckitt Benckiser Group, the makers of Lysol to issue a statement warning against improper use of their cleaning products.
