Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., appeared to refuse to shake hands with Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., after the Tuesday televised Democratic Party presidential debate, CNN is reporting.
The news network posted a video showing Warren walking over to Sanders, who extended his right hand to Warren. In turn, she clenched her right hand and pulled it close to her body before clasping both hands together.
The two chatted briefly as candidate Tom Steyer stood nearby.
“I was just going up to say goodnight,” Steyer laughed as he told CNN. "And I felt like: ‘Okay, there’s something going on here.’
“You could see it was an awkward moment and that’s what I could see. So my goal was simply to say goodnight to two people I respect.”
CNN had reported this week that in 2018 when both Warren and Sanders were discussing possible presidential bids, he told her a woman could not win the office.
And in a statement, she said: “I thought a woman could win, he disagreed.”
Sanders has denied the comment and during the debate said: “Of course a woman can win.”
