GOP Slams Warren for ‘Hick’ Comment

Tuesday, 18 October 2011 12:42 PM EDT

Democratic Massachusetts senatorial candidate Elizabeth Warren on Friday quipped on a liberal Internet podcast that she was courting the “hick vote” for her 2012 campaign, as first reported by Politico.com.

The former Harvard Law professor and special advisor to the secretary of the Treasury apparently was joking with “Left Ahead” interviewer Mike Ball after he mentioned that he, like Warren, is from Oklahoma.

“If you’re going to be in the Senate, and we would like you to, as a fellow person who was born in Oklahoma and raised in West Virginia, I’ve been called a hick myself a lot. I’ve got to say I’d love to see you in office,” said Ball.

“I’m going for the hick vote here, I just want you to know,” Warren responded. “Maybe we could start wearing stickers that say ‘Hicks for Elizabeth’ – could we do that?”

A Massachusetts GOP representative decried Warren’s choice of words.
“Professor Warren’s insulting use of the word ‘hick’ offers a revealing prism into her elitist and arrogant worldview,” spokesman Time Buckley told ABC News. “Massachusetts voters deserve an explanation about just who Professor Warren was referring to when she spoke of winning the ‘hick vote.’”

Warren is the front-runner in the Massachusetts race, reports DailyCaller.com. She is expected to face off against Republican incumbent Sen. Scott Brown.
