Rep. Adam Schiff hit back Wednesday at President Donald Trump for his tweets justifying his call to Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying previous commanders-in-chief "didn't need their staff to tell them DO NOT CONGRATULATE" someone with such a history as the Kremlin leader.
Schiff, of California, who is the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said on Twitter that Putin "helps North Korea evade sanctions, props up a murderer in Syria, invades his neighbors, and who just used nerve agent in Britain."
Trump tweeted earlier that former President George W. Bush "didn't have the 'smarts'" to deal with Putin, while Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama "didn't have the energy or chemistry."
Trump made the observations in a pair to tweets justifying his call Tuesday to Putin, arguing that "getting along with Russia (and others) is a good thing, not a bad thing."
The Washington Post reported Tuesday that Trump ignored a warning to "DO NOT CONGRATULATE" Putin — all in capital letters — in a telephone call earlier in the day about his re-election victory Sunday.
