Ed Gillespie: Obama Policies 'Destroying Work Ethic'

By    |   Friday, 27 June 2014 11:48 AM EDT

The economic policies of President Barack Obama are "killing jobs," and "destroying the work ethic" in the country, Ed Gillespie, Virginia GOP Senate candidate, said on MSNBC.

Gillespie said he is focusing on job creation while incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Warner has voted with the Obama administration on economic policies.

"The worst thing about this administration's policies, that [Sen.] Mark Warner has supported 97 percent of the time since taking office, is not just that they're killing jobs. It's that they're destroying the work ethic," Gillespie said Friday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"Long term, that's a bigger possible problem for us as a country, because we know there's not just economic value in labor, there's human dignity in work," Gillespie said.

Gillespie, former chairman of the Republican National Committee, was an adviser to former President George W. Bush. Polls show Gillespie trailing Warner by as much as 17 points.

Government's role, Gillespie said, was to "make it easier for people to get that first job."  Proposals to raise the minimum wage on the federal level would cost jobs, rather than create them, he said.

Gillespie said Warner's record showed he "hasn't been the independent voice for us in Virginia that he said he would be."

The concern among voters in Virginia, Gillespie said, was if, "President Obama continues to have a blank check for the last two years of his administration."
