Democrat Terry McAuliffe has opened up an 18 point lead over Republican Ken Cuccinelli in the Virginia governor's race, according to a poll of early voters.
The survey by Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling for the League of Conservation Voters puts McAauliffe ahead by a margin of 57 percent to 39 percent,
Politico reports.
Officials with Cuccinelli’s campaign were quick to question the reliability of the PPP poll, which surveyed 724 early voters Oct. 19-20.
“In this race, there has been lots of polling and lots of very bad polling,” Cuccinelli spokeswoman Anna Nix told Politico. “In two weeks, voters will decide.”
The results, however, mirrored a poll released Wednesday by
Rasmussen Reports showing Cuccinelli, the state attorney general, trailing McAuliffe, a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, by a margin of 17 points. The Rasmussen survey of 1,000 adults in the state taken Oct. 20 also gave Libertarian candidate Robert Sarvis 8 percent of the likely vote.
A Quinnipiac University poll also released Wednesday had McAuliffe ahead of Cuccinelli, but by a narrower 7 point margin. The survey of 1,085 registered Virginia voters taken Oct. 15-21 found that 46 percent respondents favor McAuliffe compared to 39 percent for Cuccinelli. The survey put Savis' support at 10 percent.
The Quinnipiac survey also put support among women, probably the most crucial demographic in the race, at 49 percent for McAuliffe and 35 percent for Cuccinelli. The results among men voters was more evenly split, with 44 percent favoring Cuccinelli and 42 percent siding with McAuliffe.
