Convicted Virginia Delegate Resigns, Vows to Run Again

By    |   Friday, 19 December 2014 11:54 AM EST

Virginia State Delegate Joseph D. Morrissey agreed to resign after he accepted a plea deal last week on a misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

According to prosecutors, the 57-year-old Morrissey and a 17-year-old girl who worked for him as a receptionist had sex multiple times at his law office in August 2013 and texted their friends about it.

Morrissey announced that he would resign effective Jan. 13, and at the same news conference said he would also run in the special election to fill his 74th House of Delegates seat, according to The Washington Post.

After his July indictment, Morrissey, a Democrat, said "there's not a snowball's chance in hell" that he would resign and insisted he was innocent, according to The Associated Press.

"I've been wrongly accused and I'm going to be totally exonerated when the evidence comes out," Morrissey told reporters.

Morrissey received a six-month jail sentence, but through a work-release program was able to continue his job in Richmond while sleeping in a jail cell at night.
