The Trump campaign’s use of “Macho Man” and “Y.M.C.A” at campaign rallies are “perfectly legal,” 70s disco group, the Village People, said Monday.
"We have received numerous requests demanding that we prevent or ban President Donald Trump’s use of our songs, particularly 'Y.M.C.A.' and 'Macho Man,' the group wrote in a Facebook post on Monday. "Since our music is not being used for a specific endorsement, the President’s use is 'perfect[ly]' legal."
The Village People’s “Macho Man” blared over speakers Monday at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad, India, as Trump entered the packed arena. The event, “Namaste Trump,” drew more than 100,000 people.
The song includes the lyrics: “Every man wants to be a macho macho man/To have the kind of body, always in demand/Jogging in the mornings, go man go/Works out in the health spa, muscles glow/You can best believe that, he’s a macho man.”
The same song was used at some of Trump’s campaign rallies.
"Like millions of Village People fans worldwide, the President and his supporters have shown a genuine like for our music," the Village People said in its post. "Our music is all-inclusive and certainly everyone is entitled to do the YMCA dance, regardless of their political affiliation."
