The Republican co-chairman of the Commission on Presidential Debates implored audience members minutes before the start of Wednesday night’s political debate between Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., not to remove their facial coverings at any time during the event.
''You were told when you entered here that you had to have your mask on,'' said Frank Fahrenkopf, the chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1983 to 1989 and co-chair of the commission with Dorothy S. Ridings, the former president of the League of Women Voters.
''And the rules are that you will keep your masks on. And if you take your mask off, someone will approach you and ask you to please put your mask back on. If you do not put the mask back on, you will be advised that your ticket is canceled.''
Fahrenkopf’s warning, which comes only days after President Donald Trump was released from the hospital after being treated for COVID-19, reminded attendees at Kingsbury Hall on the campus of the University of Utah that their admission ticket included a pledge to follow protocols.
If they did not, ''you will be escorted by law enforcement from the premises,'' he said according to Mediaite.
''So, we beg you. Please do not take your masks off,'' he concluded.
