Fishing and hunting are now constitutional rights for Utahns, Fox News reports.
Utah voters overwhelmingly backed an amendment to the state’s constitution that makes hunting and fishing the preferred ways of managing and controlling wildlife.
Election results show that about 74% of Utah voters supported Amendment E, which protects the right to hunt and fish.
According to Ballotpedia, House Sponsor Rep. Casey Snider said hunting and fishing is a “part of who we are.”
“This bill is not only about protecting who we are, but preserving who we are going forward,” Snider said.
Local Salt Lake City affiliate Fox 13 reports the amendment doesn’t make the right to outdoor sports absolute, “as state laws and policies would still prohibit, for example, a convicted poacher from getting a hunting license.”
In addition to Utah, there are 22 other states that have constitutional rules protecting the right to hunt and fish.
