Usher, Bill Clinton Support Michelle Nunn's Ga. Senate Bid

It's a powerful star-wattage combo: charismatic former President Bill Clinton and hunky R&B star Usher.

Now they've teamed up to raise money for U.S. Senate candidate Michelle Nunn of Georgia as she battles in a tight race against GOP opponent David Perdue, CNN reports.

The extra fundraising fire power for an event, hosted by the Atlanta-based Usher at his home on Sept. 13, comes as some are predicting a contest in Georgia that could decide the political balance of power in the Senate.

The popular Clinton has been out making appearances for candidates across the country as his wife, Hillary Clinton, ponders the biggest political decision of her life and as his marquee draw is unmistakable.

Nunn was grateful for the help.

"Both in office and out, President Clinton has been a tireless advocate for Georgia families and a force for consensus building and creative problem solving in Washington," she said in a statement. "I have been honored to work with him as CEO of President George H.W. Bush's Points of Light Foundation, and I am very grateful to have his support in this race."

Nunn, the daughter of former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn, leads businessman Perdue by just 2 percentage points, the Washington Times reported Wednesday, citing a poll by GaPundit.com, which was commissioned by three local news outlets.

Nunn's edge seemed to be gleaned from women voters, the Times noted, making what should have been an easy pickup by a red state a scary challenge for Republicans. Should she win, it would make the first time in 14 years that Democrats could pull a Senate seat in Georgia.

"Her campaign is designed to do better among women," GaPundit.com Editor Todd Rehm told WRBL News 3 on Tuesday. "She was chosen and promoted partly to do better among women."

A Real Clear Politics polling average, taken July 23-Aug. 25, gives the race to Perdue by 2.6 percent but calls it a toss-up.

Perdue, who has served as CEO at such companies as Pillowtex, Reebok, and Dollar General, has highlighted the economy during his campaign and the value of job creation in his state, the Huffington Post noted.

Through June, Nunn had raised $9.2 million, while Perdue brought in $5.8 million, according to campaign finance data compiled by opensecrets.org.
