Sunday, 19 September 2010 07:08 AM EDT

HONOLULU (AP) — U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, the longest-serving member of the U.S. Senate, has been nominated by Hawaii Democrats to seek a ninth term.

The 86-year-old senator won the state's Democratic primary Saturday with 89 percent of the vote in early returns.

Inouye will face the winner of the Republican primary in November's election. Cam Cavasso was leading the Republican primary with 69 percent of the vote.

Inouye has been a senator since 1963, and he's the chairman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee.
