The governors of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut are teaming up in a coalition to sue President Donald Trump's administration over the 2017 tax reform law, The Washington Post reported.

The group is challenging a provision in the law that sets a cap of $10,000 on the amount of state and local taxes that residents can deduct from their federal taxable income.

The group of governors, all Democrats, said in a conference call that the provision is based in politics, not fiscal policy. They said that the provision would most affect those who live in states that are run by Democrats, the Post reported.

Conservatives have complained that the deduction benefits high-tax liberal-leaning states.

The governors will file the lawsuit in federal court in the coming weeks, and said they were talking to other states about joining the group, according to the Post.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo tweeted about the coalition Friday.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said in a tweet that the law was "politically motivated."

Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy also tweeted on the governors' plan.
